Futur simple

Practise the Futur simple

When

The future, especially plans and predictions. Demain, il fera beau. (Tomorrow the weather will be nice.)

How to form it

Infinitive + ai, as, a, ons, ez, ont. With -re the final e drops: je vendrai.

Pitfalls

  • Many irregular stems to learn by heart: j'irai, je serai, j'aurai, je ferai, je pourrai, je viendrai, je verrai, je saurai, je devrai, je voudrai.
  • In speech you often hear the futur proche: je vais manger (I am going to eat). For things happening soon it is usually just as good.
  • After quand (when it is about the future) French uses the futur where English uses the present: Quand j'arriverai, je t'appellerai. (When I arrive, I will call you.)
