Impératif

Practise the Impératif

When

Orders and requests. Viens ici ! (Come here.) Parlons français. (Let's speak French.)

How to form it

Usually the présent of tu, nous and vous, without the subject. Finis, finissons, finissez.

Pitfalls

  • With -er verbs the s of tu drops: parle !, not parles !. The same goes for va ! (aller) and for verbs like ouvrir and offrir: ouvre !
  • Exception: before y and en the s comes back: vas-y !, manges-en !
  • Irregular: sois, soyons, soyez (être), aie, ayons, ayez (avoir), sache (savoir), veuillez (vouloir).
  • In a negative the pronoun goes before the verb: dis-le but ne le dis pas.
