Präsens
Practise the PräsensWhen
What is happening now, what is always true, and often what is still to come. Ich spiele Fußball. (I play football, or: I am playing football.) Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin. (Tomorrow I am going to Berlin.)
How to form it
Stem + e, st, t, en, t, en (ich mache, du machst, er macht, wir machen, ihr macht, sie machen).
Pitfalls
- German has no separate form for "I am playing". Ich spiele means both "I play" and "I am playing".
- If the stem ends in -d or -t, or in a consonant + m or n, an e comes in between: du arbeitest, er findet, es regnet.
- Many strong verbs change their vowel with du and er/sie/es: fahren → du fährst, er fährt, sprechen → du sprichst, sehen → du siehst.
- Separable verbs split: the prefix goes to the end. anfangen → ich fange an.
